Job Summary

A Setting Out Engineer is responsible for ensuring that all construction works are executed in accordance with the approved drawings, specifications, and design requirements. They work closely with architects, project managers, and site teams to establish survey controls and accurately position structures, buildings, roads, and other infrastructure elements on the construction site.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Read and interpret construction drawings, plans, and specifications to identify the scope of work and establish survey controls.
  • Conduct site surveys and prepare accurate topographical surveys, leveling, and setting out of the works.
  • Ensure that construction works are executed in accordance with the design requirements and specifications.
  • Coordinate with other construction professionals such as architects, engineers, and project managers to ensure that construction works are carried out in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Monitor construction progress and report any issues or discrepancies to the project manager.
  • Ensure that all survey equipment is calibrated, maintained, and used in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Provide technical advice and support to site teams on construction issues related to setting out and surveying.
  • Review and approve as-built drawings to ensure that they accurately reflect the actual construction works.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, environmental policies, and quality standards.
  • Liaise with external stakeholders such as local authorities, utility companies, and landowners to obtain necessary approvals and permissions for construction works.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Surveying, or related field.
  • Relevant professional certifications such as Chartered Engineer or Chartered Surveyor.
  • At least 3-5 years of experience in a similar role in the construction industry.
  • Strong knowledge of surveying techniques, including the use of survey equipment and software.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Good problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations and environmental policies.


£50,000 – £60,000 + travel, healthcare & pension
