Senior Buyer – RC Frames & Groundworks in London

Senior Buyer needed for an RC Frame & Groundwork Subcontractor based in North London.

I would describe this contractor as a medium-sized, modern and highly regarded specialist subcontractor. They turn over around £50 million per annum but that is expected to grow this year and moving forwards. They have a close-knit team and believe in working together to offer a competitive solution to their client’s concrete frame and groundwork needs. Projects are spread predominantly around London, but they have been known to work as far out as Cambridge. And package values usually range from around £1 million to £15 million each.

On a personal note, I have known some of the directors of this business going back 10+ years and regard them as truly fantastic people to work with. Whoever is successful in securing this opportunity will be surrounded by driven individuals who will support and work with you to make this company the best it can be.

I have been asked to recruit a lead Buyer for this specialist reinforced concrete frame and groundwork subcontractor. This position has a crucial part to play in the business’s ability to operate smoothly as you will be the central link between the suppliers and the sites.

Day-to-day duties will include negotiating prices with suppliers for materials and plant (steel, concrete, muck away, etc) and then placing the necessary orders for what is needed across 15 to 20 live sites around London and the surrounding areas.

An organised and efficient mind is needed to work practically with site teams to make sure not only are materials ordered at competitive prices, but also that they arrive on-site when needed. No one wants deliveries to turn up early, late, or wrong!

Therefore, this opportunity will suit someone who has worked for a rival concrete frame and groundwork subcontractor in a procurement role already and someone who is looking to take on their own department with the possibility of building a team as the company grows. I need someone who has the rival knowledge so both the prices of products are familiar but also the operating methods of a concrete frame and groundwork business are second nature too.

The criteria I have been asked to keep to is simple:

  1. Any applicants must have worked for a rival concrete frame or groundwork subcontractor in the UK to be considered, in a procurement role.
  2. You should have an understanding of the various products that you will be buying in this role and a rough understanding of their current market rates.
  3. You need to be based within a commutable distance to our client’s office in Watford.

Outside of that, I am open to talking to any interested parties.

As with most of the positions I recruit for, salary is dependent on experience, but I am expecting to consider individuals who are currently earning or looking to earn anywhere from £50,000 to £100,000 per annum. If you meet the criteria I have listed for previous experience, this ballpark area should be expected. Additional benefits such as car allowance, pension, and bonuses can be discussed at the point of the interview.

What our clients say

We have worked with Alex Wallace and the Cityscape Recruitment team for a number of years now and find their service excellent.

They supply well matched and vetted candidates and very quickly understood all our requirements. They have always demonstrated good market knowledge and an ability to deliver to our requirements.

Commercial Director,
Main Contractor

I have used Cityscape Recruitment multiple times over the last 5 years. Very pleasant to deal with and all candidates put forward for interview are well suited to the position and well vetted by the team, so there is no time wasted with unsuitable applicants. I would highly recommend Cityscape. I intend to use them again in the future should any vacancies become available.

Operations Director,
Platt and Reilly Ltd

The Cityscape Recruitment team has always been great to deal with. Always ready to listen to our needs and requirements, a quality some recruiters do not appreciate or have, then advising where they can assist in our staff procurement. We look forward to working with Laura and Cityscape in the coming years.

When you first contact us, be that through direct contact, responding to an advert or applying through our website, we will connect you with a consultant who works in your specialist area.

Initially, they will arrange a meeting to talk through your CV and career history. They will encourage you to go into detail about your background and experiences, capabilities and responsibilities, personal circumstances and any other factors they feel are relevant to help them build up a well-rounded profile of you.

We take extraordinary care in matching professionals to an opportunity – one that will help enhance their careers and a clients’ team. We therefore also use this meeting to empower you in your career. Using our extensive knowledge of the construction industry, we would provide in-depth overviews of businesses, projects and available roles, and guidance on where your strengths will add the most value and career potential.

After this meeting, the consultant will speak to a number of their clients about you and your CV. Who they speak to can be either jointly agreed upon or you can trust the judgement and expertise of the consultant to contact clients they feel are the best fit for your experience and goals.

If any clients are interested in meeting with you, the consultant will manage the interview process, coaching you before any interviews if required. (Further guidance can be found here.)

If you are successful in receiving an offer(s), our consultant will communicate this with you and help to negotiate the offer(s) and any other terms of employment.

Finally, we will support you in resigning from your current role, navigating potential counter offers and starting your new role.
